• S – Single or head of household
• M – Married but spouse not filing for EIC
• B – Married and both filed for EIC

J1 Visa: Checking this box tells PayMaster that the employee is exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. In general, J1 students are exempt from FICA and Medicare. If you employ J1 students you should refer to section 9 of IRS Pub 15 (Circular E) for information about federal income tax requirements for J1 employees/students or "nonresident aliens" in IRS parlance.
